What Is an Unbalanced Tire?

So, when unbalanced tires are hitting the pavement the weight distribution across them is not uniform. The center of mass may not be in the exact center of the tire itself and so parts of the tire may be heavier or lighter than they ideally should be. When this happens, parts of your tires will wear down faster than usual.

If left unchecked, this can cause wear on one side of the tire making for a less stable drive. It’s good to have your tires inspected for balance every now and then to make sure they’re being taken care of. Your technician may even perform a balance inspection during a standard tire rotation.

Tire balancing is different from wheel alignment though—it’s good not to get those confused. If you find that your tires need to be realigned it’s because the wheels are not aligned with the axle properly. These two issues can cause similar symptoms, but if you’re dealing with wheel alignment issues you may find that your vehicle will seem to veer to one side while driving.

Why Do Tires Become Unbalanced?

It’s common for most tires to come out of the factory already unbalanced to some degree. Creating a perfectly balanced tire during manufacturing doesn’t always occur, so you may need some adjustments performed during your first tire rotation.

That being said, damage to the wheel rims or any kind of misalignment can cause an unbalanced weight distribution. If you hit a particularly nasty pothole or get into a collision you may find that your wheels have an unbalanced weight distribution afterwards.

How Is Tire Balance Maintained?

Typically, when your tires need to be balanced your technician will place weights in parts of the tire to improve the weight distribution. This is a fairly simple repair and can be performed along with a tire rotation, plus it shouldn’t take too long.

Your technician will have to measure out how the weight is distributed across the tire. This will probably take most of the time. It’s always good to go to a professional as they will have experience in properly measuring the weight distribution and applying the weights to the tires themselves.
